Hello, all. Good to be back. Thanks very much to Jefferson Eng for
running the column for these past 2 weeks and for those who've given
him updates. There will be some subtle changes to the look of the
column over the next few weeks - you'll see the full effect by July.
"The Impossible Planet" had overnight ratings of 5.94 million
viewers, an impressive 39.8% share of the smallest total TV audience
in some time. Much of the UK was experiencing really good weather,
lowering ratings for everyone, and a large timeshift is expecting
when final numbers come out next week.
Nederland 3 begins its run of Doctor Who in the Netherlands this Saturday at 7PM CET with Rose, the latest broadcaster to add the series. It's one of the countries where many viewers can get BBC One, which airs the current series of Doctor Who one hour later (8PM CET, 7PM BST).
US viewers should remember that SciFi http://www.scifi.com premieres the 1st Series Finale this Friday (9PM & Midnight Eastern) and Sunday (11PM Eastern). Last chance to get folks to tune in for the US premiere of an episode for a while. After next Friday's marathon, Doctor Who will move to Sundays at 11PM with the odd weekday marathon until further notice.
KBTC/KCKA 28,15 Tacoma/Centralia, WA http://www.kbtc.org celebrates the return of Doctor Who to its lineup this Saturday at 6PM with a 4 hour pledge presentation of The Dalek Invasion of Earth. The William Hartnell stories do not appear to be under the same contract issues that affect later classic series Dalek stories.
Come Friday we should finally have the official premiere date for Doctor Who Series 2 in Australia on ABC http://www.abc.net.au/tv . It is widely believed that The Christmas Invasion will air on Saturday 8 July at 7:30PM with Series 2 following over the following 13 weeks from 15 July. It's the time slot that Doctor Who aired in last year. ABC is running trailers including Doctor Who noting "Christmas In July."
There's speculation that New Zealand viewers may just get ahead of
that with Prime http://www.primetv.co.nz , as their alleged air date
for The Christmas Invasion is Thursday 6 July at 7:30PM (crossing
fingers - we'll see). The popular theory for Canada is Tuesday 26
September at 8PM (8:30PM Newfoundland) on the CBC
http://www.cbc.ca/television . CBC would begin Series 2 with New
Earth, as it already aired The Christmas Invasion on Boxing Day last
year. CBC begins a repeat run of Series 1 late Tuesdays at Midnight
starting 20 June.
Showtime Arabia's http://www.showtimearabia.com service for North
Africa and the Middle East just added Doctor Who repeats back to
their Style UK channel. 2 episodes a week - Sunday and Monday
evenings with repeats on Monday and Tuesday mornings. Episodes air
at 10:30PM and 9AM UAE, 9:30PM and 8AM KSA (Saudi Arabia), 8:30PM
and 7AM Egypt, and 6:30PM and 5AM GMT. Episodes should air through
mid-July.
The BFBS military service is making schedule changes to its Doctor
Who broadcasts to accommodate the World Cup and new programming. The
Sunday broadcast on BFBS 1 and BFBS Navy is at 5PM instead of 7PM
CET to accommodate World Cup matches. The BFBS 2 Who and
Confidential showings permanently move to Thursday 11:30PM CET next
week, with the BFBS Navy Saturday airings moving to Friday the same
week.
BBC Three http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree is airing full length
repeats of Doctor Who Confidential late Sundays again. 3:15AM this
week, 3:30AM next week. Other repeats of Confidential are the 15
minute versions.
Maryland Public TV http://www.mpt.org will go back to the Patrick Troughton era on the 24th again. MPT has had to do this several times in the past 2 years, but it was reported that stations are allowed to buy from the full run of the classic series again. Hmm.
The BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media
http://www.c21media.net often announce when a Doctor Who
international sale occurs. Worth keeping an eye on, just in case.
